Many of us jump at the opportunity to get out shopping for those end of Christmas deals at the mall. Well, this is common knowledge to the criminal predators as well. As a veteran police officer in a large metropolitan area, we have seen statistics rise about 20% after the holidays. Criminals interested in purse snatching, vehicle break ins for the merchandise left in plain view on the seat, or shoppers just not paying attention to their grocery cart where they have their valuables unsecured as ready for the taking.
As you are out shopping in a department store, take a minute to sit back and watch people as they shop then ask yourself if you shop the same way that do. Most shoppers leave their cart unattended with their purse sitting in the basket unsecured. I have observed on several occasions people who simply walk away from their cart for several minutes oblivious to the fact that in doing so they are setting themselves up to be victimized.
Another point to keep in mind is shopping at night in crowded shopping malls with large parking lots. Parking in unlit areas of a dark parking lot is asking for trouble. Large shopping malls concentrate the ambient lighting towards the front of the store and that are not necessarily concerned with sections of the parking lot towards the back. It is important to identify this situation and try to park your vehicle towards the front of the store where there is more ambient lighting available. Criminals have been known to lurk in the shadows waiting for potential victims to prey on. Others break into vehicles and lye waiting for the victim to enter the car where they are overpowered and forced to drive to secluded areas where they are beaten and or raped.
By following some simple rules, you can protect yourself and reduce the chances of becoming prey of the criminals out looking for potential targets.
First, secure your purse or handbag to the shopping cart with the carry strap and zip up all of the compartments when you are shopping. This simple task will reduce the chance of someone taking your purse from the shopping cart or reaching into it and stealing your pocket book when you are not looking. Of course the best alternative is to wear your purse on your person with the carry strap across your body from one shoulder down to the other hip.
Secondly regarding parking in dim lighted parking lots. Take your time once you get to the mall and drive around if their are no parking spaces available towards the front of the mall. This will give you the opportunity to scan the area looking for people lurking around the parking lot who appear not to fit in. Look at the clothing they are wearing and ask yourself if the long black trench coat is a common piece of clothing worn on a hot summer day. Chances are this is a criminal looking for a victim.
Once you park your car, make sure the car is secured before walking away from it and set the audible alarm as well. As you walk to the front doors of the mall, be aware of what is going on around you as you do so. Most victims confronted by assailants in a parking lot setting saw the criminal approach from a distance and had a chance to escape but the did not recognize the threat. Pay attention to those little hairs on the back of your neck, they are out own built in alarm system and they are rarely wrong when they stand up and say "watch out here comes trouble".
Another option I highly recommend is to purchase a personal defense weapon of some sort. Having something in you possession readily available just may save your live. Non-lethal personal defense weapons come in many styles, shapes and sizes. Tasers are the most effective personal defense weapon available on the market today and are backed by a lifetime replacement policy. In the event you eve have to use a taser to protect yourself or a loved one, the unit will be replaced frr of charge simply by filing a police report regarding the incident where it was used.
Article issued by veteran police officer and founder of StunTech Public Safety Products Joe Davidson. He is also an accomplished martial artist in Tae Know Do, Brizillian Jiu-Jutsu, Hapkido, and Kraz Maga.
Stay safe and remember that the things we possess are material items that can always be replaced, becoming injured fighting for and object is where most make the mistake. Don't be a hero unless the threat is to your personal safety, then fight like a mad person and leave the rest to God.

Which is Best, Taser, Stun Gun, or Defebnse Spray?
As a career police officer and owner of a personal defense products business, people often ask what personal defense product is best for them, the taser, stun gun, or defense spray also known as pepper spray. Well the simple answer is....it depends.
Let's take a look at each of the products above individually and evaluate their pros and con's
First, let's look at defense spray (pepper spray). Defense spray comes in many forms. Defense spray has been around for a long time and is currently being used by law enforcement agencies across the country today. There are various ingredients being used in the defense spray industry to include CS, CN, and OC. As a trainer in the law enforcement field I have been sprayed with all three and can verify that the OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) is by far the most affective defense spray on the market.
OC defense spray comes in 5% 10%, and 18% (wildfire) concentrations with the 10% solution being the chosen spray by police officers.
Pros: Defense spray works by spraying the attacker in the face primarily targeting the eyes, nose and mouth. The 10% OC solution attacks the mucous membranes resulting in extreme burning, swelling, drainage, and difficulty breathing. The OC being sprayed in the eyes causes the eyes to slam shut involuntarily resulting in temporary blindness due to the burning sensation. Defense spray is very affordable for those of us with limited budgets.
Cons: Defense spray is considered to be a target specific use of force alternative. What this means is you must hit the attacker in the face in order to get the full affects of the pepper spray...
The second issue is the fact that self contamination is often an issue because OC is an airborne agent that is easily carried by the wind.
Now let's look at stun guns. Stun Guns come in a variety of shapes and voltages. These nifty little personal defense weapons are very affective and affordable as well, however, they require the victim to be up close and personal with the attacker to be affective. We will discuss this a bit later.
Pros: Stun Gun voltages start around 100,000 volts and go as high as 950,000 volts packing a major shock.. Stun Guns can be easily concealed as cell phone, pager devices, and even a telescoping baton application. These packages give people a variety to choose from and consider when shopping for a stun gun.
Cons: As previously stated, stun guns require personal contact with the attacker for the shock to be delivered. My personal belief is that the ultimate goal is to keep the attacker at a distance, so approaching them to deliver a shock places the victim in an enhanced vulnerability position unless they have some self defense close quarter training to revert to as a backup plan.
Finally, we come to the preferred personal defense weapons, the Taser C2 by Taser International. This product is the Cadillac of the self defense industry and has a proven record of effectiveness both in the law enforcement field and in the civilian market.
The Taser C2 works by pushing a button on the devise which shoots out 2 small darts from a cartridge in the front of the unit. Upon hitting the intended target, they are capable of penetrating 2 inches of accumulative clothing and delivering a 50,000 volt shock straight to the core of the attacker. This shock is designed to cause TOTAL body incapacitation and the best part is the cycle of voltage lasts for 30 seconds.
Now let me try and tell you what this means in simple terms. The story goes like this;
Pros: Again in a training atmosphere, I received a shock from a taser to complete a certification so I could carry one on the street as a patrol officer. The shock caused all of my muscles to constrict as if a seizure took control of my body, as a result, I fell to the ground motionless until the voltage cycle stopped. This shock was the most intense pain I have EVER experienced, and I underwent a major back surgery in 2004. I would gladly undergo back surgery 10 times again, before I would take the shock from a taser. I can testify, the Taser C2 is very effective and in my opinion, the only choice for anyone concerned about personal safety.
Tasers are backed by a 100% replacement guarantee and warranty. If you ever have to use your taser to protect yourself, we replace it free of charge. The only requirement is a police report has to be filed reporting the events of its use.
In closing, if you are looking to purchase a personal defense weapon and you do not feel comfortable with firearms, the first step is to take a look at your lifestyle, health and abilities. If you are a traveling professional who spends a lot of time in a car driving from state to state, well the taser would be my suggestion. It does not require much movement and it can be deployed to any part of the body by pushing a button and aiming the laser aiming devise at the intended target.
On the other hand, I you work from home or are a stay at home Mom, defense spray may be sufficient to obtain compliance from unwanted people knocking on the door.
Now if you are simply looking for an affordable alternative to put distance between you and a potential attacker, stun guns have been known to be effective from a distance simply by doing a spark test pointed at the attacker while you tell him "If you come any closer, I am going to shock you and I won’t stop until the police come" usually they don't want to mess with electricity and they run the other way in a hurry.

Shopping Safety
As a veteran police officer, we typically see an increase in crime trends towards the end of the year due to the amount of shoppers out looking for good deals overstocked on retailers' shelves from the previous year. Many people do not realize the potential of becoming a victim in a crowded shopping mall, grocery store, clothing retailer, or business complex until it is too late. Many thieves spend time doing surveillance and watching patterns people set while they shop. A good example follows;
A few weeks ago, I was at a certain major retailer attempting to pick up a prescription. When I arrived, I was amazed to see numerous people waiting in line. Being the last one in line, it gave me the opportunity to stand back and watch people and how they protected their personal belongings. While watching, 5 people in front of me, 4 of them left their shopping carts unattended on at least two occasions with their purse, wallet, or other valuables in plain view and accessible to others walking past them.
Above I mentioned criminals watch patterning habits of shoppers in a crowded place. Often times if they observe someone leave their purse unattended 2 or more time, they are labeled as a potential target of theft. Another example is someone who has a habit of driving the same route every time they go to the Gym, Grocery store, or work; they set habits that are convenient for not only them, but criminals who may be watching. You see, we get so busy with life's everyday events that we end up making ourselves potential targets and victims. The answer to dealing with this epidemic across the country is a simple one.
First, make a conscious effort to drive different routes to and from your scheduled appointments or family duties. By doing this you become less likely to be followed by potential criminals who are desperate to find a victim. Keep an eye out for vehicles that seem to keep showing up where ever you go. This is not an easy task, but if you make an effort to watch vehicles leave the parking lot the same time you do and follow the same route you are taking, chances are high they may be following up. To identify if this is the case, simply drive off your route by making a few extra turns and see if the vehicle follows, however, be careful not to drive yourself into an unpopulated area or dead end.
Secondly, non-lethal personal defense weapons are available all over the internet and through retail stores across the country. Defense spray is a very cheap alternative when compared to being confronted with a criminal who intends on harming you with a physical assault, or property crime. Make the investment into a personal defense weapon; it just might save your life someday. Your family and friends care about you and don't want to see you end up a victim.
Other products that seems to be the best all around non-lethal personal defense weapon available on the market is the Taser® C2 made by Taser® International. The Taser® C2 has been confirmed as having the same stopping power as a 9mm handgun except there is no log lasting effects from its use. The technology behind the Taser® C2 is really pretty simple. When a potential victim perceives a threat to their personal safety and well being, they can deploy the unit from a distance of up to 15 feet away. The Taser® is activated by opening a safety cover which emits a red laser aiming device. If you do not get verbal compliance, simply push the fire button and two barbs are deployed by a nitrogen capsule inside the cartridge unit. The barbs impact the aggressor and discharge a 30 second cycle of 50,000 volts completely incapacitating him/her for the duration of the 30 second cycle.
The Taser® C2 is designed to be left behind at the scene of the attack so the victim can seek help. The best part is the fact that it is backed by a lifetime replacement guarantee, you simply report the incident to law enforcement and provide a copy of the police report to law enforcement and Taser® International will replace the unit FREE of charge. Taser® International feels your safety is more important that the cost of a replacement Taser® C2.
Now some of you may think that $349.99 is a lot of money for a personal defense weapon, however look at it this way, a visit to the emergency room will exceed $500.00 easily, not to mention the mental anguish is being victimized by a stranger. I consider this as a cheap personal protection device when you compare it to the injuries I have seen sustained by victims.

College Student Safety
As a parent of a new college student who was eager to leave the safety and comfort of our parental control, I gave a few suggestions for my daughter before she departed for her new experience. She made sure to tell me that I worry too much and she would be fine. Within about two week's time, the phone call started coming in from her about things that had happened to her which she had no control over. As a veteran police officer, I would like to give a few things for college students to think about while they pursue their dreams.
There is safety in numbers. Often times, college students become independent to the point that they feel secure walking across campus alone at various times of the day and night. This is a situation that could lead to the student becoming a victim of a crime. Perpetrators often study patterns which we all establish in our everyday lifestyles. We take the same path of travel to and from the groceries store along with to and from work or in this case class.
Break the habit. Get in a habit of taking various routes to and from scheduled events. This simple act can decrease the potential of becoming a victim of a crime and will soon become a life saving daily habit. Another common mistake college student make is drinking alcohol beyond their ability and metabolism. This leaves students vulnerable to being physically controlled and overpowered. There have been many reported rapes on college campuses across the county that female victims could not recall the events of the attack due to their level of intoxication.
Let's face it; part of the college experience is to experience the party scene. By implementing a few party safety tips, students can enjoy the experience without becoming victims. First, get into the habit of keeping drinking glasses in your possession. If you become separated from your glass for any reason, never drink from a cup after you have left it unattended. There is a significant chance of an unattended drinking glass being tampered with by perpetrators dumping drugs into it.
Don't allow people into your car you don't know well. Students fresh to the college scene are dependent upon establishing friendships to accommodate their need to become popular. Students with vehicle often become popular avenues of transportation for students without cars. Drivers are often put into situation where they are designated as the sober driver for a group of people they don't know. This can lead to the potential of rape or assault. This situation also leads to more DUI arrests due to the previous mentioned need to be accepted and popular. Drivers will drink to fit into the group and end up paying the price when they get pulled over for minor traffic violation associated with alcohol impairment. This decision can also lead to motor vehicle accidents causing injuries or death of occupants.
Purchase a personal defense product and keep it in your possession at all times. There are many products available which are legal to carry without a permit. Items such as defense spray, Taser's, and Stun Guns are inexpensive and well worth the investment into your personal safety. By following these few suggestions, you and your family can feel at ease knowing you have a safety plan in place while you experience the college life you have been waiting for all of your life. The Best Personal Protection Device Available
Taser® International was born when the inventor and the Smith brothers, Rick and Tom, joined forces in the late 1960s. TASER technology was developed by a research scientist at NASA. His goal was to provide non-lethal protection for individuals not interested in possessing a firearm for personal protection. The decision by the Smiths was fueled by the shooting death of two high school friends who were killed.
Let’s take a look at two different types of electronic control devices, ECD.
TASERS®, provide long-distance protection and are not considered a firearm and do not require a permit to possess. Using a replaceable TASER® cartridge fired by a compressed type of inert gas (nitrogen), a TASER fires a pair of barbed projectiles toward the attacker. The projectiles are attached to highly conductive, insulated wires coming from the hand-held device. The wires provide a 30 second 50,000 volt shock to the attacker at a distance up to 15 feet.
TASERS® are capable of delivering stopping power through up to two inches of cumulative clothing. TASERS® can also be used in close combat situations by providing drive stuns to assailants. Even after the projectiles have been fired, the TASER® C2 can be used at close quarters. It can also deliver a debilitating jolt without having the projectile cartridge installed. The backup capability seriously elevates the usefulness and diversity of the device. That means that with a single weapon, you have the advantage of both a direct contact stun gun and a distance conscious TASER®.
TASER® International has invented a product that combines the advantage of keeping potential attackers at a distance and provides close quarters defense. The TASER® C2, as in regular TASERs, fires its darts up to 15 feet, providing anyone with the ability to protect oneself and family members from danger.
Second, let’s look at stun guns. These non-lethal weapons do not fire any sort of projectile. While they come in a variety of shapes and sizes the common factor they have with each other is the fact that they all must make contact with the assailant to be effective. This means the potential of harm to the victim is much greater than if you were firing a TASER®.
Stun guns are a very effective alternative to their more expensive TASER® counterpart. Stun guns produce an effective shock reducing the attacker ability to stand or direct his muscles. The jolt of a 50,000 volt surge through his body interrupts the attacker's ability to control his muscles. This gives you time to react, call for help, or run away to a safe place.
The advantage of these self defense options provides the time needed to defuse or escape a dangerous situation. Additionally, the TASER® C2 comes in a variety of colors, is designed not to resemble a self defense tool, the Lithium Power Magazine is good for at least 50 applications. The TASER® C2 requires a felony background check for activation and comes with everything needed to start using it immediately for protection. The TASER® C2 also has a lifetime replacement guarantee. Should you ever have to use it to protect yourself or a loved one, TASER® International will replace the unit free of charge with a copy of a police report of the incident. The TASER® C2 has become the choice of thousands for personal protection.

Defense Spray, Cheap Insurance into Your Personal Safety
As career law enforcement, I commonly hear victims ask why they were attacked and that it had never happened to them before. Remember, most victims were never victimized until they day they became a victim. Defense spray is a cheap non-lethal force alternative and insurance policy into your personal health. Don’t wait; buy a personal defense alternative today, your life may depend on it.
People are turning to defense spray as non-lethal force alternatives for personal protection. Defense spray is composed from the extract of real peppers. Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) is the chief chemical compound used in it. OC is available in three concentrations: 1%, 5%, and 10%, and 18%. In addition, the spray comes in three patterns, (Stream, Fog, and Gel). Determining what application you need depends on your specific needs.
Application Styles
Stream application style has the longest effective range of all of them. Although it might be less effective due to the target specific necessity, it has a terrific range of 15-20 feet. The stream style gives the potential victim the ability to deploy the defense spray from a distance which in turn keeps the attacker away from hands on scenario.
Fog application styles have finer droplets and are quite effective. These are found to be more effective than stream styles due to their ability to cover a wider target when deployed. The range of the fog application is reduced to 10 to 15 feet depending on the weather conditions; however a word of caution applies here, you run the risk of self contamination due to the fog pattern being a mist.
Foam application styles available as well. Foam application is designed for close quarter contact and sticks to the attacker like a foam. Foam applications are the most effective of the three sprays due to their ability to stick to the assailant. Winds have no impact on them.
How Defense Spray’s Work
Tasers and defense sprays have become popular items for personal protection against an attacker. The chemical present in the sprays is inflammatory. When it comes in contact with eyes, throat, nose, and lung, it hits the mucous membranes present in them and leads to instant capillary dilation. This makes the entire affected areas swell. The stronger concentration may even lead to temporary blindness or restriction of breathing for up to 45 minutes. This is enough to weaken your assailant and give the victim plenty of time to seek help.
The best way to use a pepper spray is to aim at the attacker's face. Your attacker will become incapacitated for sufficient time so you can get help. Besides this, defense sprays are considered non-lethal force alternatives and only have temporary effects on your assailant.
Defense sprays do not require a permit to carry as a personal defense alternative; however, there are some federal, state, and local restrictions on their use. If you are seeking to purchase defense spray as a personal defense alternative and you live in New York, Michigan, Massachusetts or Wisconsin, check with your local law enforcement before purchasing a defense spray.

One Way Mirror or Not?
Yesterday, I received an alarming e-mail at work from a police officer telling me how to tell if a mirror is one-way or two-way by looking for a gap between an object such as your fingernail placed up against the mirror, and the reflective image of the object. As the myth goes, if there is a gap, the test proves that the mirror is, in fact, one-way. No gap a
Means the mirror is a two way mirror and someone could be watching you from the other side and your personal safety is at risk.
Here is a copy of the actual e-mail I received:
The Fingernail Test
Hi There - this is very interesting! A policewoman who travels all over the US and gives seminars and techniques for business women passed this on.
Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not?
This is not to scare you, but to make you aware. This is really interesting. Try it with a 'regular' mirror, and you can easily see what the gap means. This is a MUST read!!
When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror? (i.e., they can see you may be taking pictures], but you can't see them).
There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms. It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it. So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at?
Just conduct this simple test: Place the tip of your fingernail [ball-point pen, eyebrow pencil. any object] against the reflective surface and if there IS A GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror.
However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE, BECAUSE IT IS a 2-WAY MIRROR!
REMEMBER...every time you see a mirror, do the "fingernail test." It doesn't cost you anything, it is simple to do, and it might save you from getting visually raped!"
REMEMBER..."NO SPACE, LEAVE THE PLACE!"
Ladies: Share this with your girlfriends, sisters, daughters, etc.
Men: Share this with your wives, daughters, daughters-in law, mothers, girlfriends and/or friends.
Everyone...please give this wide dissemination!"
In short;
This simple test will determine if that mirror on the wall is there for you to fix your hair, OR it is a two way mirror there for a pedophile or stalker to watch your activities. Either way, this is sensitive information that everyone should share and be aware of. There are reported cases across the United States were these two way mirrors have been found in truck stops, hotel restrooms, shopping malls and more. Please share this information with all of your loved ones and family members.
Be prepared and invest in a personal defense weapon just in case you need to defend yourself. Personal defense weapons come in a variety of shapes, sizes, models, and most are very affordable when compaired to becoming a victim of a violent crime.

Hiking Safety
Backpacking and hiking is quickly becoming a popular trend across America. It is both challenging and adventurous. And it appeals to young and old, male and female. It is something virtually anyone can take part in, and there are countless options on how and where to start. Backpacking is a great way to get into shape and have fun at the same time. Whether you are going for a week or for a night, you will have a more relaxed and enjoy your camping vacation if you are well organized and prepared.
If you're a seasoned camper you are probably well aware of the equipment required for your trip, however, few hikers think of self defense as a concern. Kidnapping, abductions, rapes, and violent assaults are common in nationwide media coverage and remind us of the credible threat and need for self defense products in the backcountry.
As you are packing, check your camping equipment and make sure that everything is in good order and you have included some personal defense products such as a defense spray, taser, or a stun gun.
Defense spray also referred to as OC or pepper spray is a very effective inflammatory agent that can easily irritate the eyes and result in pain, temporary blindness, and tears of any potential threat you may encounter either human or animal. Pepper spray is an organic based agent that comes from cayenne peppers. The spray will normally come in canister form, which his often times small enough to be carried in your pocket while hiking to your campsite.
Taser International recently released the latest personal defense device for the general public, the Taser C2. The Taser C2 was specifically designed for the general public to truly feel safe in today’s troubled times. TASER products are giving people the power they need to take control and protect themselves. The TASER C2 utilizes the same technology used in TASER International’s law enforcement models to effectively stun an assailant up to fifteen feet away.
For all outdoor enthusiasts, safety should be the first consideration and it must be in front of the mind at all times. There can be several hazards in backpacking and a person who does not think about being safe could fall prey. Territorial wildlife is a commonly encountered threat when in the wilderness. Having the ability to think clearly, remain calm, and having a personal defense weapon readily available will decrease the chances of becoming a victim of an attack.
Another consideration in personal safety while in the backcountry is being aware of other people. Popular hiking trails and wilderness areas have been grounds for violent attacks and kidnappings in the past.
As an example in 1974, hikers discovered a grave yard of bones in a Washington forest, later identified as belonging to missing women from both Washington and Utah. Investigators from both states communicated together and came up with a profile and composite sketch of the man named "Ted" who approached women for help, sometimes appearing helpless with a cast on his arm or crutches. This man was later identified as the notorious Ted Bundy.
People backpack for different reasons. Some do it for the great exercise, some because of the adventure and love of nature. Others backpack as a way to learn and explore the outdoors. Whatever the reason, there are large and expanding numbers of backpackers. They explore and they love the wilderness, and have the common goal of a safe backpacking experience which can provide memories that last a lifetime.

What Personal Defense Weapon is Best for the Home
Recently I conducted a personal defense seminar specifically discussing personal defense spray, the C2 Taser, and Stun Guns for a group of men and women all interested in protecting themselves and their families. One question that kept coming up was what personal defense weapon is the best to have in the house where young curious children reside? Is a Gun, Taser, Personal Defense Spray, or some other product the best choice?
The best way to answer the question is this. All personal defense weapons are made with one purpose and we all know that is to provide protections to individuals who possess them. That being said, each of them requires training. The level of training depends on 1) what item is being used, 2) The user’s comfort level in handling the item, 3) Their ability to identify a true and credible threat upon their health and safety.
In my seminars, I remind my audience to keep in mind that if they choose to arm themselves with a firearm, the results of their use is always has a permanent result. Weather the result is scaring, internal organ damage, or death.
In my opinion, those who have children in their homes should keep all personal defense weapons secure at all times but readily available for use if they are needed. Remember, a personal defense weapon is only effective if it is used. Purchasing an item for personal protection and leaving it locked in the glove box of a vehicle is not a good practice to get into. You need to have the item in your possession in the event you need to use it.
Children are naturally curious and learn from the results of their curiosity. As adults, we are all responsible for keeping a safe environment for our children by not allowing access to personal defense weapons until the child is mature enough to understand how to use them, that they are not toys, and the results they are capable of providing. All of these factors need to be considered when choosing a personal defense weapon for home protection.
Items such as the Taser C2, Stun Guns, and Personal Defense Spray are very effective but they all have their own pros and cons. However, they all have something in common which are no prolonged effects on their intended or accidental target. The same cannot be said of a firearm, the results are far too often devastating injuries and in some cases death.
It is for this reason I feel strongly that non-lethal personal defense are a better choice for parents, individuals with limited knowledge of firearms, and those who are not comfortable using a firearm. Misuse of firearms or the lack of knowledge often times lead to accidental discharges and injuries which could have been avoided.
The best way to determine which product is the best choice for each person is to first explain the pros and the cons of each weapon; and then go from there to match them up to the specific individual.
Pepper spray, also known as personal defense spray or MACE, is a common personal defense weapon that is inexpensive and easy to use. It is 10% solution of cayenne pepper. The active ingredient is oleoresin capsicum or OC. It attacks the mucous membranes causes tearing, intense eye pain and even temporary blindness. It comes in variety of sizes and applications (fog, stream, foam). They are all concealable and hide easily in a purse or pocket.
PRO’s
Inexpensive, easy to use, easy to conceal are capable of bringing most attackers to their knees rendering them helpless for up to 45 minutes.
CON’s
Limited amount of uses, target specific to the face and eyes, and have a risk of self contamination of the user.
The Taser C2 is by far the best personal defense alternative available on the market today. Capable of delivering a 30 second cycle of 50,000 volt’s of shaped pulse technology to your attacker from up to 15 feet away. The Taser C2 has been tested by law enforcements who determined it has the same stopping power of a 9mm handgun but does not leave long term injuries to the attacker. The Taser C2 deploys 2 darts attached to the Taser by conductive wires and is designed to be left behind by the victim if it has to be used and is backed by a lifetime guarantee by filing a police report if used. We will replace the Taser free of charge in the event you ever have to use it. Your life is worth more than the cost of replacing you personal defense weapon. (Please refer to the below list of Cities and States who have restrictions on Electronic Control Devises).
PRO’S
Backed by a lifetime replacement guarantee, Deployed from 15 feet away keeping the attacker at a distance, has the ability to be used up to 50 times with each Lithium Power Magazine, comes in a variety of colors.
CON’S
Requires a felony background check which costs $9.95 to be completed on the user for activation. Some restrictions, illegal in several states (check your local law enforcement)
Stun Guns are an effective personal defense alternative. They are available in a variety of sizes and voltages. Ranging anywhere between 350,000 to 4.5 million volts of electricity, they are capable of knocking an attacker to the ground. Stun guns are available in a variety of sizes and shapes; such as cell phones, pens and even a lipstick! They are simple to use and more suited for hands on situations when an attacker gets inside your comfort zone.
PRO’S
Stun Guns are inexpensive, easy to use, and come in a variety of appearances as discussed above.
CON’S
Illegal in several states, limited by the life of the batteries, and you have to be close personal contact with your attacker and apply the shock directly to his or her body. I feel this is a big factor to consider. No attacker should be allowed close enough to use a Stun Gun, this is a bad situation.
Any of the other 50 states are legal to possess a stun gun however you should check with your local law enforcement regarding their restrictions before purchasing a Stun Gun.
Choosing the right personal defense weapon is an important decision. You should evaluate your own personal needs like your lifestyle, what you want out of the product, and your training and background. If you are interested in hosting a personal defense seminar for a group of friends or coworkers in Colorado, please contact us for scheduling. In Your College Student Prepared for the Experience
The thought of college is a very exciting time in a young teen’s life. A brand new set of experiences are just ahead and the thought of independence and separation from parental rules is appealing to any teen. College life teaches important lessons about life which may turn out more important than those they learn in the classrooms. College dorm living can also be a learning experience; however it can be a dangerous one, especially for young women. Women need to be aware that their college checklist includes the knowledge and awareness of campus living and the potential threats associated with it.
Media coverage about college living has taught us that student safety is a nationwide concern. Kidnappings, rape, and violent assaults occur daily on college campuses daily. Student safety and personal defense should be the first thought for any student venturing into the college life.
Education, awareness and common sense can be one of the biggest steps in preventing a student from becoming a victim of crime while experiencing college life. Some of the basics steps of prevention should include, always keeping your dorm room secure and never let a stranger into your dorm or apartment building. The addition of a door alarm for your room will decrease the chances of an intruder entering your dorm with the intention of committing a crime.
Statistics have shown that criminals are not opposed to the commission of crimes in secluded areas of college campuses. Crimes are frequently encountered in populated and well traveled areas.
Some simple practices every student should consider include, utilize well lit, well travelled areas when walking to and from destinations on campus. Walk with friends, especially at night. Finally, invest in you safety by adding a non-lethal personal defense weapon to you daily tools. Tasers, stun guns, and pepper spray are just a few effective quality protective products with a history of successful uses on assailants.
Tasers utilize a 30 second cycle of 50,000 volt to incapacitate attackers threatening bodily harm. Capable of being deployed from a distance of up to 15 feet, Tasers are designed to be left behind by the victim allowing then to retreat to safety and are backed by a lifetime replacement guarantee by the manufacturer.
Stun guns are a good non-lethal self defense alternative proven to be very effective in fighting off a potential attacker. Utilizing high voltage, stun guns momentarily render attackers defenseless "stunning" them and giving the victim a chance to get away. While stun guns are another good, non-lethal self-defense method, they are not allowed in all states.
Pepper spray products are a cost effective tool when used properly. Keep in mind that some states have some restrictions on pepper spray so be sure to check with your local law enforcement before you carry pepper spray. When buying pepper spray, look for the OC rating. They range from 10 percent to 18 percent OC.

Tip's for Prevention
According to Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics, 4 out of every 10 women have been a victim of rape or violent assault and 1 of the remaining 6 will fall victim to one of these vicious crimes at some point of their life. It is estimated that a sexual assault or rape is being committed every 60 seconds, here in the United.
There are some basic steps that you can take to help lower your risk of falling victim to sexual or violent assault. Some of these things you might already know but many women still ignore them because they believe "it won't happen to me", sadly it can happen.
1. Always know exactly where you are.
In the event you are confronted with a threat, you need to know your exact location. A 911 dispatcher will also ask you where you are, be prepared to give cross street intersections or physical address locations. This will provide you with the best chance of responding law enforcement officers finding you.
2. Be prepared to act.
Have your keys ready in hand before you get to your car. This will prevent you from having to search for your keys and reduces the time it takes to open the car door. Once inside the car, lock your doors and immediately drive away.
3. Avoid dark areas of streets and parking lots.
While walking on the street late at night, make sure you walk in well lighted areas of streets and parking lots. Criminals utilize the dark as cover and hide in wait for vulnerable women.
4. Invest in a quality self defense product and be prepared to use it.
Investing in a quality personal protection product and having it readily available for use is a cheap insurance policy for your safety. There are many self defense products on the market today which are very effective in providing you with a chance to get away from a determined criminal. My personal recommendation is the Taser C2. This product deploys 2 probes from a distance of 15 feet and packs a punch of 50,000 volts on you attacker dropping him like a bad habit. The Taser C2 is backed by a lifetime warranty and replacement guarantee.
5. Develop a number of daily routines.
Have various routes to and from work and the grocery store. Try to travel a different route each day avoiding the possibility of someone identifying your routine.
6. Always be aware of your surroundings.
Look around the area before getting into their car. Look for people who do not fit the area and appear to be lingering around for no reason. Criminals prey on vulnerability and have been known to study their victims prior to the attack in an attempt to establish a pattern.
Having a plan and always carrying a personal defense product such as pepper spray, a Taser, Stun Gun is always a good idea. After all, you are the first line of defense in your personal safety. Don’t wait for something to happen before you invest into your personal safety. Act now, you own it to yourself and your loved ones.

Workplace Violence Considerations for Safety
As society changes with the struggling economy, more and more people are losing jobs due to budgetary cutbacks. This problem is directly associated with workplace violence and it’s time for all of us to start thinking about our personal safety while at work.
Emergency response procedures are a vital element in protecting employees. As a veteran police officer, I have been personally involved in active shooter incidents, fire, assaults, and medical calls all occurring at commercial properties. Assuring your employer has an emergency action plan for commonly encountered incidents will no doubt save lives and prevent the incident from being worse. If your employer does not have a documented plan, develop one among your coworkers to include communication and keywords to discreetly identify trouble. Make frequent changes to passwords as employee rosters change with termination and attrition.
Proper placement of security cameras can prevent theft and be a major investigative tool in the event of a physical attack, particularly when they are placed frequently traveled areas or high occupancy around the office. Fake or dummy cameras have been known to be somewhat effective, however when it comes down to an incident actually occurring, they do not video the incident rendering them useless.
Making a small investment into your personal safety is always a good idea and considered as an insurance policy to good health. There are many personal defense weapons on the market that can be purchased for a reasonable amount of money. Some of these weapons include Tasers, Stun Guns, and Personal Defense Sprays. Another good self defense device to keep around the office is personal alarms. Audible personal alarms are capable of emitting a 120db tone to alert others of trouble or draw attention to you when confronted by threatening conditions. Personal defense weapons and tools have given people around the country the confidence to protect themselves when needed.
Every workplace has specific dangers within their own industry. The fact is, some industries are more susceptible to these events than others, although no industry is completely safe from violence. Having a solid action plan and the tools necessary to deploy it go a long way. Criminals prey on vulnerability and rely on all of us to be heavily involved in our work so we do not notice the signs of violence. A good action plan shows confidence and determination to survive which in turn deters crime.
Quality surveillance equipment is essential in fighting workplace violence. The days of the old affordable black and white VHS tapes are long gone and completely unreliable for investigative purposes. Quality digital video recording equipment is the last line of defense when it comes to identifying criminals. Remember that workplace safety extends beyond physical altercations, sexual harassment and other issues; the methods for addressing these should also be clearly outlined in the employee handbook too.
Criminal activities can take place anywhere and at any time, including offices and other commercial properties, homes, and outdoors. By keeping your personal safety in mind wherever you go, you can be prepared for these possibilities. Whether your office is protected by security guards or not, the personal safety of ever ne on its premises must be overseen by quality video recording equipment capable of identification in low light conditions.

Are Personal Defense Plans Really Necessary?
Many of us sit at home every evening and watch news of rape, carjacking, and personal attacks which happen on a daily basis, yet we have all succumbed to the belief that this will never happen to us or one of our loved ones. As a veteran police office, I can honestly tell you this is a common problem in society. We must take alternative actions to protect ourselves. Personal defense weapons are an inexpensive alternative to becoming a victim of a violent personal attack.
Society and cost of living has made it necessary for many of us to work longer hours or sometimes multiple jobs. These issues place us in vulnerable positions because we constantly have other things on our minds other than our personal safety, we rely on local law enforcement to keep us safe. The reality is simple though. Law enforcement consists of proactive enforcement with officers concentrating on high crime areas and reactive responses to reported crimes. Although proactive enforcement deters crime, career criminals prey on vulnerability and patterns we set for our daily routine. Simply put, you are your own first line of defense. Here are three tips to keep in mind to ensure your safety:
1. Be proactive. Understand that at some point in your life, you may be confronted by a criminal. Rather than waiting to become a victim, develop an action plan for safety. Start by changing your routine frequently. Have multiple routes to and from work and home to avoid being followed home by criminals. Arm yourself with a stun gun, a canister of pepper spray, or Taser and train yourself how to use it properly without hesitation. Make your home more secure with home safety alarms and other products. Taking action now should be considered as a cost effective insurance policy into your personal safety. You owe it to yourself and your family.
2. Practice your techniques. Many people who carry personal defense weapons believe they are safe simply by possessing the item. You MUST practice using the device you purchase. If you do not know how to use the product, it is rendered useless when you need it. Be prepared to use it without hesitation. A quality personal defense weapon can save your life in the event of a personal attack.
3. Be aware of your surroundings. Take the time to look around before you get out of your car. Be aware of persons in the area who appear to not fit in. Park in well lit areas of the parking lot. At night park towards the front of the lot near the building. If necessary, drive around the lot until a parking space becomes available . Often times these areas are covered by surveillance cameras.
Making a few changes in your life is an easy start to defending yourself against crime. Criminals rely on our busy schedules and vulnerability and often time follow us around to learn our routine. Change things up a bit and don’t get in the habit of doing the same things daily. Always remember your personal safety is the most important part of your daily routine.

Personal Defense, Tactics We All Can Use!
Since 1997, the Federal Bureau of Investigations has reported an increase in violent crime in categories of rape, sexual assault, and violent attacks. Statistics show that, 1,382,012 violent crimes were reported to law enforcement in 2008.
There were 454.5 violent crimes reported per 100,000 inhabitants. Aggravated assaults accounted for 60.4 percent. Robbery accounted for 32.0 percent, forcible rape accounted for 6.4 percent and murders accounted for 1.2 percent.
With the rise in violent crime, it has become apparent that the topic of self defense
is not a commonly practiced tactic of the general population.
There are a few simple tactics which be practiced by anyone concerned about their personal safety and that of their loved ones. These tactics are taught to recruit police officers in law enforcement academy settings and they are easy enough for every one of us to implement into our daily routine.
Arm Yourself with a Quality Non-Lethal Defense Product:
In today's society, many business owners have developed retail web sites marketing the industries leading brands of quality non-lethal personal defense products. These items include but are not limited to Tasers
, Stun Guns and Personal Defense Sprays. Non-lethal personal defense products do not require permits for possession and all are considered very affordable and effective. Many of these items come with a lifetime warranty and replacement guarantee.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings:
In corporate America, it has become a daily routine for many of us to work long hours and sometimes multiple jobs in order to meet financial obligations. Many of us have long commutes to and from work and spend an average of 4-6 hours on the cell phone planning daily activities. Let's face it, most of us pack our day with more activities that anyone in their right mind would attempt to complete. The result?, We become far to busy completing tasks that our personal health
and safety become less important.
Many career criminals make a living studying our daily routine's to determine at which point we are most vulnerable, and that's when they attack. We need to train ourselves to slow down and be aware of our surroundings.
Be aware of individuals who appear to not belong in the area. (ie. bulky clothing on a hot summer day). These are indicators of potential trouble that we should stay clear of when possible.
If you are forced to do your shopping at night, take extra time to find a parking space in the front of the parking lot. Make sure the area is illuminated well by street lamps.
Look around before exiting your car. Look for people hanging around the area who have taken an interest in you. If you see someone who does not fit the area, don't get out of the car and just drive away. Worst case scenario, your were wrong about them and didn't get your groceries but you are still safe.
Many people across the country have become victims because their everyday activities have overrun their lives. Training yourself to be aware of your surroundings is simple to do for all of us and quite possibly may prevent us becoming a victim. Criminals prey on vulnerability.

Personal Defense Misconceptions Answered
There is a common misconception by the general public with regards to personal self defense weapons. When this topic comes up, most people believe that non-lethal self defense weapons are illegal to carry and require a special permit to carry them, this simply is not true.
Due to media coverage in the past, the topic of self defense is commonly associated with firearms and the laws restricting their possession. Few people realize that there is a wide range of non-lethal personal defense weapons available on the market which require no permit and are totally legal to carry by the general public. However, it must be noted that some of these non-lethal weapons do have some restrictions in certain states, so please check you local, state, and federal laws in you area before deciding to make a purchase. Below are some examples of affordable effective non-lethal self defense weapons available to the general public.
Tasers:
One of the latest self defense products to hit the market is the Taser C2, This non-lethal self defense weapon is the tool of choice for women in real estate, joggers, and college students around the country. Police studies have found the Taser C2 to be as effective as a 9mm handgun. The C2 can be discharged from a safe distance of 15 feet, or used as a drive stun if close quarter applications are necessary.
The Taser C2 works by discharging two probes from a cartridge into an attacker. The probes are attached to the Taser by wire contacts capable of firing up to 15 feet. 50,000 volts travels through the wires into the probes causing involuntary muscle contractions forcing an attacker to become incapacitated and fall to the ground.
The Taser C2 has a lifetime replacement guarantee. The units are designed to be left behind in the event they have to be used. The 30 second cycle was developed to give users a chance to get away and retreat to a safe distance. By filing a police report about the incident and forwarding a copy to the manufacturer your unit will be replaced free of charge. We believe your life and safety is worth far more than the cost of a Taser C2.
The Taser C2 requires a felony background be conducted for activation. This background check cost's $9.95 and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Some states have restrictions on electronic control devices (E.C.D.'s). Tasers are currently prohibited in NY, NJ, WI, MI, RI, MA, D.C., and HI.
Pepper Spray:
Pepper spray is a very affordable and effective personal self defense tool. pepper spray comes in many forms. The most effective form of pepper spray is a concentration of 10% to 18% O.C. (Oleoresin Capsicum). This is a very potent concentration of Cayenne Pepper with a heat rating of 2 to 3 million scoville heat units. Capsaicin is a chemical compound which stimulates nerve endings in the skin and mucous membranes causing great pain and discomfort virtually incapacitating and attacker. Pepper spray is very affordable and an absolute must for anyone concerned with personal safety.
